The global shipping industry's decarbonisation efforts face hurdles, with Japan proposing significant amendments to the IMO's Net-Zero Framework, including the removal of key targets and a carbon pricing mechanism.

This has stirred discontent among shipowners, who fear a shift towards less environmentally friendly fuel alternatives like LNG and biofuels. Meanwhile, the Clean Shipping Alliance and the Marine Fuels Alliance are collaborating to promote alternative fuels and emissions reduction technologies.

In contrast, the United States is pioneering nuclear-powered vessels, with plans for up to 3,000 such ships by 2060, potentially altering the landscape of maritime fuel sources amid ongoing climate challenges.
